This is the best shoutout for a pie reclamation I've ever read! I went to a PIE wedding once and it was freaking amazing! Like, pies I never knew existed in flavor combinations only the most brilliant baker could conjure up. Abbey, you're onto something. And I'm here for it.

Ahhhhhh!!! Haha, Katie, I love this. And that’s the dream!! They did a pie wedding??! Damn, that’s cool. I just feel bad for the pie forever being overshadowed by the cake…

You got me, I almost spit out my coffee this morning reading this. Your chef humor shines through. I'll never look at cake the same way again... for many reasons this being one of them. Let there be pie!

Hahahaha I love this! I hope most of your coffee was salvageable ;-). Thank you for reading and sharing! And lots of love from my pie heart to yours

I think we might share a brain - or at the very least, taste buds. I'm certainly not a cake hater, but I am a definite pie person. I have actually had several birthday pies, because pie! I am not a coffee fan, but I am a bit addicted to tea. And red velvet anything is just not ok. Also sprinkles may be cute, but what in the chalky, stick-in-your-teeth-but-sort-of-melt-at-the-same-time weirdness is that? No thank you.

Haha Leslie, I love you. This was amazing. Birthday pies are goals!!! And because you’re you, I’ll accept your tea person into my coffee world.

Just adore you ❤️

It’s perfect really bc you can have all the coffee, I can have all the tea, and we can share the pie.

Loved this Abbey - I experienced something similar but unfortunately wasn't a full success even with the best of intentions - https://open.substack.com/pub/christophernicholaschapman/p/the-baggage-we-carry?r=2bnro3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

Omgeeeeeee I freaking loved this so much I cannot even express. Such a delicious little treat to find in my inbox. I even read it to my 13 year old daughter and she agrees!!! I am not to be trusted however, because cake…. But only my own made cake, which there’s only one… this was freaking brilliant!

To be honest, my go-to is always going to be chocolate, however when I used to bake, I made a peach pie from scratch and - my god - that pie was a thing of beauty and I've never been able to replicate it. And maybe it is better because of that. :)

Oh damn. Peach pie is the business. I love all things peach. Also, yes to chocolate. Though, I’m a die hard dark chocolate person. The darker the better.

My takeaway from this: cake is moist but pie is wet. I will never, ever think about dessert the same way.

I come from a long lineage of pie makers. My favorite is gooseberry. The puckery tang of the gooseberries coupled with the sweet filling is a thing of dreams.

This makes me so happy right now. Yes!! That’s it right there. The tang and the sweet swirled in with the buttery savoriness. It’s perfection.

Love this. When I first moved to Mississippi decades ago, I was introduced to sweet potato pie. I asked if it was a vegetable or a dessert. The answer was, "Yes." That was good enough for me then and still is. I am firmly in the pie camp.

This had me smiling and giggling throughout the whole post! Thank you for the light post, Abbey—it made my day. I grew up in the south where grandma’s pecan pie was a religion and boxed birthday cake an homage to all the tired moms I knew in the 90s. Both had their due. But I think I don’t discriminate any form of sugar! ;D

Chocolate and peanut butter ice cream cake though—now we’re talking. Not pie and not quite cake! 🤣

I’m with you on this. I seldom finish the cake I’m dished at special occasions because most are just a big, bland sugary mess that tastes like nothing. Seems like it emulates our American food ideal - looks good; tastes like nothing! 😉

Expand full comment
Abbey Wade's avatar

It’s so true!! And that’s sort of my point… I just wonder how many of us would actually choose these cakes we have been given all our lives. We never really had a choice and I feel like maybe it’s a beloved and traditional thing only for that reason

I love that you question things like this. I LOVE good food and yet I’m often surprised by what some people consider good. Taste matters! In fact I’ll make that a new hashtag - #tastematters. Think it’ll stick?

Abbey Wade's avatar

We can definitely give it a try! And I’m with you. I love food too much to not respect it. Every part of what it takes to nourish us should be enjoyed.

I made all my babies’ baby food and spiced it up. Things have gotten better now… but when I tasted packaged toddler food back then, it made me cry. There was no flavor. And that’s how it all begins… When we don’t feed our little ones food that tastes like something. #tastematters
