Share the Moon
For the long distance lovers out there, I wrote this for you
I’m the button you push when you need something fast.
Steady, firm, you can finger my margins and I’ll obey.
I’m the metronome drip of your coffee when the day leans toward leisure.
Slow and considered. Waiting to be tasted.
I’m the wrinkle on your pillowcase–edges of dreams pressed against your skin.
And the cold spot your foot finds on the sheets.
When the clouds swarm the sky that once was still, that’s me, excited to hear your voice again.
When the last frost blankets the town, and Spring is whispering close, I’m there.
Between ice and the breath of warmth is where I live.
Mailed boxes and typed letters bridge the river from yesterday to today.
Ink to paper, and stamp to cardboard is love with aim.
My absence exists in everything I have yet to touch that gets to touch you every day.
In the mirror that has never been cleaned and gets to study your face, your chest, your walk.
In the paper in the binding of the books that get to hold your hand and your gaze every night.
The hurt lies in the minutes I miss, unable to press my knee to yours or watch you think too much.
The hurt is heavy, but it is where you live within me. There is no you without the absence of you.
The sky is ours; it cradles us both.
I can’t share a home with you, but I’ll settle for sharing the moon.
I was challenged to write something under 250 words. This is 247. Also, this part doesn’t count.
I love you 💋
