‘Darling, your jealousy is showing and it clashes with your bio.’ 🤣

Ummm… huh? When did Substack become exclusive to whatever these people consider themselves? I would never have known if you hadn’t written about this ridiculousness!

Abbey Wade's avatar

It’s wild, isn’t it? And I’m glad you haven’t seen it. But I also hope I’m not feeding into it by having written this. It was in a ton of posts and notes I saw starting a couple days ago. Comments upon comments of other women saying they’ll “join in solidarity and block her too”. It’s sad when support for others turns into exclusivity.

The Ex Narc Magnet's avatar

No way?! I’m horrified! I follow Glennon on other platforms and she’s always been such an inspiration to me. My mum always says, "Jealousy is a terrible thing" and wow, it’s turning these women into full-on mean girls. Substack is supposed to be a space for voices, not a high school clique!

Abbey Wade's avatar

So true. I’m glad I don’t understand it. I’m glad it feels strange and foreign inside my bones as a concept. And I wish that it will disappear soon.

The Ex Narc Magnet's avatar

Ugh… it’s just horrible. Sending a big hug 🫂 and you did the right thing speaking up 🤍

Abbey Wade's avatar

Thank you, love❤️

Wonderful post. It is this sort of behavior with the misalignment of the bio that reminds me of the same bully and mean girls from all stages of life. Why it never changes is beyond me. Use your agency. Choose your focus. If for goodness sakes if you want voices for all then that is ALL. I remind myself daily that if I have too much opinion about what someone else is doing, I need to slow down and look at myself and what needs healing.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Ohhhh I LOVE that, Paula. Let’s say it again

I remind myself daily that if I have too much opinion about what someone else is doing, I need to slow down and look at myself and what needs healing.

Thank you❤️

I am shocked!! Sick to my stomach - why would woman out of all people stand against her ????? She is FOR woman…This is so disappointing and I’m glad you brought it up- let it be a reminder : We have a LONG way to go still…. 5 steps forward 10 steps back - I just hope Glennon doesn’t let it rock her in the least bit- we need her !

Abbey Wade's avatar

It’s so disappointing. And she just left today. A couple of hours ago. I tried. I really tried. Thank you, Tina❤️

Tina Shure Pharm.D. , Rph's avatar

I wonder if she will talk about it on her podcast - I know she was so excited to be here… and I felt like I found gold when I saw her here!!!!

By any chance, are you going to see her speak??

Abbey Wade's avatar

I suppose she might. She also may need to cleanse herself from it all. Whatever she needs. And I was excited too❤️

I haven’t had plans to hear her speak, actually. I don’t know when that would be!

Amie Joy's avatar

You’re not feeding into it at all, thank you for being it to light so that we can all stand up to this. Thank you!

Abbey Wade's avatar

That’s really kind of you to say, Amie. Thank you❤️

I don’t consider myself a writer so guess half of them better block me too. I use Substack similar to how I did tumblr, a visual and personal journal. Guess I missed the memo we’re all out to win pulitzers.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Hahaha. Oh, thank you for the giggle, Rebecca. Yeah, can we just loosen up juuuust a bit, maybe? But it’s so devastating that this all created such a terrible and unfortunate moment. Love to you❤️

I suspect that Glennon has more goodness in the tip of her little finger than most have in their entire bodies. She has done so much more than most to lift the voice and lives of ordinary people. She generally does not interview celebrities on her podcast but instead amplifies the messages and work of people who are wise and have something important to say. Even if they don't have huge platforms themselves. Actually, especially if they don't have huge platforms themselves.

There is an issue with those who have powerful platforms (including the big publishers) not being interested in good work but following those who have numbers behind them but Glennon's work itself counters that. I do not have a lot of followers or subscribers and probably never will. But I would never wish for her to have fewer so that I could have more - that's a nonsense. I do not feel threatened by her - I feel held, comforted and strengthened. Go Glennon - we need your work and are grateful for it.

Abbey Wade's avatar

This is stunning. What a beautiful thing to have written. And so true. The followers thing baffles me, actually. One is able to follow more than one account…Therefore, no one is taking anything from anyone.

Really loved reading this; thank you❤️ again

Thank YOU Abbey for sticking up for the right thing. WE CAN DO GOOD THINGS!

Abbey Wade's avatar

And yes. We CAN do good things ;-) x

This is just so kind. Thank you again❤️

I saw something yesterday about a "famous person" who just joined Substack and automatically zoomed up to 215,000 subscribers (I think that was the number) and I thought, "Who would that be?" but I was too busy to figure it out. Then, this morning, I stumbled across this open letter to Glennon Doyle, and it really resonated with me. Of course Glennon deserves to be here — and she has all those subscribers because she's earned a well-deserved following for her work. But I've been in the same boat as Priscilla, and I believe she makes a good point. Have a look. I'd love to know what you think: https://substack.com/@priscillaharvey1/note/c-112843279

Abbey Wade's avatar

Thank you for sharing this with me, Debby. This was not at all the Glennon content I was getting in my feed so I appreciate it very much that you showed it to me. I do understand now, and have heard, that a lot of people were upset at the way she entered the space. I was never personally bothered by it, but I do understand it. And it makes sense that it could be rattling. The content that I was seeing was so terrible and cruel. Priscilla is very tender with her reasonings, and so are you. And that is so wonderful. I don’t want to live in a world where everybody agrees. But I think the main point of my wanting to write this was that I do want to live in a world where more people lead with tenderness and kindness. So thank you for doing that❤️

Debby Waldman-What To Believe's avatar

Thank you so much for taking the time to look and respond. I really appreciate that. (And I'm guessing Priscilla will, too.)

Abbey Wade's avatar

Of course!! I’m happy you showed it to me. Having lots of different perspectives is so important!!

Priscilla Harvey's avatar

Abbey, thank you for reading and being open. And always, thank you for standing up to bullies. ❤️

Abbey Wade's avatar

Of course! I will always absolutely be open. Thank you. Priscilla❤️

Priscilla Harvey's avatar

Debby, thank you for sharing this with me! As someone who grew up being bullied, it would have broken me if that is how my letter was read. I’m so glad this is not the content Abbey was talking about. I actually love Glennon and think the world of her, which is precisely why I wrote my letter. I can only hope it’s received with the love it was written with. Thank you again, Debby. ❤️

Amy Alpert's avatar

This conversation right here is why we love substack. Thanks for being willing to see nuance. These are important conversations to have.

Abbey Wade's avatar

I completely agree. I love connecting with people and sharing our versions of all the things. Thank you, Amy❤️

Debby Waldman-What To Believe's avatar

I second Amy's comment. I was nervous about responding to your piece yesterday, Abbey, but I also thought, "Well, Priscilla's open letter really spoke to me, and Abbey also makes sense and I believe people should have the chance to see both perspectives." So much of what's wrong with the world right now is that people cannot even try to get out of their own heads to understand there are so many different ways to look at things — it's not all black and white, right or wrong, this way or that way. And it is so easy for people to misread, literally, what people post on various platforms. Sometimes I keep my opinions to myself because I don't want to be misunderstood or taken out of context. And yet, people will take things out of context regardless. Case in point: Last month a writer I sort-of know had her book savaged in a NYTimes review — her book was reviewed along with another, and the reviewer loved the other book and hated hers. I felt bad for her and was curious to see how she was handling it so I looked at her Facebook page, where she'd been posting about the book since landing a deal a few years back. That's where I saw that she had cherry-picked the positive adjectives (understandable) and taken a glowing sentence that had clearly been about the other book and posted that as well, so it looked as if she'd gotten a stellar review. I was horrified. And I thought, "Man, if I was the reviewer and someone took my words so out of context, I would be furious." We all take a chance when we put our words out in the world. I'm glad that in this corner, at least, people respect those words.

Jenny Peterson's avatar

I’ve seen these posts and it turned my stomach. Thank you for calling it out! I’m thrilled Glennon has the following she does — it’s given me courage to write and put myself out there. So thank you, Glennon. Don’t listen to the haters.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Jenny!! Thank you for saying this. It’s just awful human behavior and the fact that it’s been mostly cis women is extra disappointing. I appreciate you chiming in. Love to you❤️

Jenny Peterson's avatar

I want to comment on every post, “So…how about you develop some resilience and self worth, rather than expecting someone else to dull their shine in order for you to feel better?” I mean, GROW UP.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Exactly. And what’s so interesting about it all… is that it’s not even logical thinking. Her being here doesn’t take away from any of us being here. The complaints I see about her only ‘just joining’ and ‘already has so many followers’…

they weren’t your followers, ma’am. You can follow more than one individual here.

Hannah's avatar

THANK YOU for saying this. I have been so dismayed and disgusted by the cowardice, scarcity, jealousy, and anger that people have been displaying in light of Glennon joying this website. I noticed that none of them had issues about WHAT Glennon had to say, but only that she was making money for saying it (the same way these writers are also trying to make money for what they say!)

Their reactions are actually proof that they are not yet ready or equipped to have the kind of audience and influence Glennon has earned over decades of sharing her vulnerability and wisdom. Thank you for taking a stand against what is so obviously bullying.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Oooof Hannah. This is fantastic. Thank you for all of this. It was perplexing for me, as well - the complaining about doing something you're trying to do... it didn't compute. I appreciate this so much. Thank you again. Love❤️

Michele Chapman's avatar

There are a lot of big writers on here. They help cover the cost with their membership, and bring people in.

Abbey Wade's avatar

This is SUCH an important thing to note. Thank you, Michele!!

Michele Chapman's avatar

Who knows some unknown writer might even get a break by being discovered by a well known writer. Things happen ✨️ ❤️

Abbey Wade's avatar

That’s true! We can all share one space. We all have things that make us uniquely us. And honestly, leading with openness and kindness isn’t that hard to do. That’s the thing I have a hard time with on this. It’s just leading with all the things we don’t need in our lives…The disconnection. We need more connection wherever we can get it

Michele Chapman's avatar

I agree. I also forgot to comment that it was very kind of you to write about this. I was just treating it like someone new joined, but some of the attention wasn't kind. Like some I joined because Liz Gilbert brought me here. She was very open about how well known people were joining and bringing resources to the platform.

If you research you will find there are a large number of people doing very well on Substack and there are some significant writers here. I see it as positive. ❤️

Abbey Wade's avatar

I love all of this. And also Liz Gilbert!! She and Glennon did a live talk today here that I watched. Their relationship is beautiful

Michele Chapman's avatar

They both are authors I have read at times when I needed to hear their words, I still go back and reread some of their work. I can well imagine it was a great listen.

Kass Hall's avatar

I, too, have been watching this with astonishment. Who are any of us to dictate who can or cannot use a platform? Quite bizarre! (Particularly since Glennon is one of the good'uns!)

Abbey Wade's avatar

Yes, Kass!! Yes. My thoughts exactly❤️

Bob Sassone's avatar

I was baffled when I read that Notes post about Doyle. And the worst part about it, besides the person who wrote it, was all of the high-fives and agreement and nodding by the people replying to her! I don't get it. Doyle can't be here because she's famous? People are irritated by the way she introduced herself here? In what way does the way she does things affect your life or career?

Oh, and as an aside, the problem is Notes. I think Substack has ruined itself with Notes. It can't be just a newsletter/blogging platform anymore, it's now a social media network, and all of the problems and irritations and opinions are here just like in the other bad places as people race to get their likes and restacks.

Cheers,

Bob

Abbey Wade's avatar

You may be onto something, Bob. I’m still new here so I don’t know what it was like before notes, but I have heard that it’s changed so drastically.

And that was exactly the (almost) worst part about all I was seeing.. the cheering everyone on to continue to be cruel.

Thank you for sharing with me, Bob. Love to you❤️

Monica Moore's avatar

I agree, Abbey; I’ve also been seeing that sentiment from several women in my feed. I will say that I know what these writers may be feeling. When I first encountered Glennon’s writing, there was something about it that irked me, although I continued to wolf it down like air after being underwater. I couldn’t figure out why I was bothered.

At some point I realized it was jealousy driving that feeling. I wanted to blog, I wanted to write books, but I hadn’t done it. When her writing echoed my thoughts, or fed my soul, I was thinking, ‘I should have written that!’ It brought to light my feelings of failure, combined with what I came to recognize as internalized misogyny.

I recently reread Untamed without this burden, and it brought me to tears this time, and with not a trace of jealousy. I was able to take in her message as a student, not a competitor, and that changed everything.

I’m also one of the folks who also came to Substack via Liz and her Lovelet community, and there I do more listening than speaking (or writing!) Sometimes we need to let go of the need to MAKE the perfect gift, and just accept the gift we’ve been given. I appreciate your perspective!

Abbey Wade's avatar

Monica!! Oooof. This is incredible. I cannot fully articulate how wonderful it is to have someone say something so brutally honest. We all have had moments like that in our lives, and a lot of people just don’t want to admit it. The fact that you recognized what you were feeling… and challenged yourself to revisit a book that caused you to feel those things…is so admirable. Thank you so much for this. Love to you.❤️

Jill McDougall's avatar

I saw one of those posts yesterday and was so confused as to how that could even be an issue. When I saw that Glennon was here, I absolutely celebrated getting to see her again, and also getting to know others in her epic community. What a great way to connect with others on Substack!!

Really hoping that the support for Glennon outweighs the negativity so that she'll stay on this platform!

Abbey Wade's avatar

I hope so too, Jill. I’m worried there could be more of a battle here and I don’t want that. I only had to speak to the awful things I was seeing. I couldn’t take it. I appreciate this so much. Thank you❤️

Alison Lyons's avatar

I saw a note yesterday about this. The woman was admonishing Glennon not for being on here but for HOW she arrived (apparently turning on subscriptions from the get is cringe). It blew my mind. We are truly living in an emotional immaturity epidemic and the subsequent bucket o crabs is brutal and disgusting.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Damn. Thank you for this, Alison. Since writing this, I’ve been made aware that there were many other versions of a pushback… And a lot were not as cruel as what I saw. But I agree. Thank you❤️

Joelle Lewis's avatar

Do people really have nothing better to do? If you have that much time to prepare marches against one "small" cog in this universe, then you are a waste of space. There is a real world out there, traumatized and hurting, that needs our attention, and righteous indignation. I hope Glennon knows that her cog is important, and needed.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Joelle, this is lovely and just really nails it. You’re absolutely correct. It’s only fueled by jealousy and entitlement and that never serves anyone. Especially the ones who are throwing it around. Thank you ❤️

Sarah-Frances McCormick's avatar

THE WAY I CHEERED AND JUMPED UP AND DOWN THE WHOLE TIME I WAS READING THIS!!! Everyone deserves a friend like Abbey. AND a friend like Glennon!! Strong women lift up other women. This is sooo disappointing to see. Thank you for being the fighter you are!!! ❤️

Abbey Wade's avatar

Awwww. Goodness this got me so emotional. Thank you so much. Truly, it means more than I could express. Love love love to you❤️

Rosalind Kaplan's avatar

I peripherally saw this thread going on and I have to say I am shocked that anyone would have the gall to object to ANYBODY writing on Substack unless they were spreading hate or creating offensive content.

I’m a nobody who writes primarily about the culture and politics of medicine. I ‘moved’ here when I escaped the abusive world called social media. I have a tiny following and I write for them and for myself.

There are lots of people like me, but also lots of semi-famous and famous people creating all kinds of different content. It seems to me there’s room here for anyone who has something to say as long as they respect the rights of others. If you don’t like the writing, don’t read it. We all have to behave like adults if we are going to be part of any kind of community (other than a PK-12 school). So far, this has been a pretty nice community.💕

Personally, I liked Glennon’s book very much and would read more from her. And I appreciate anyone who calls out bullying for what it is.

Abbey Wade's avatar

I’ll reply to you here too ;-)

I appreciate this so much! Thank you. And I agree with you. I’m happy you’re here. I hope things turn toward kindness. Thank you, Rosalind❤️

I don’t think calling someone out for what felt more tone deaf and a marketing blitz than community building, is bullying. We women tend to think that when we address something that feels “offensive or uncomfortable” we have to walk away or dismiss it as not valid. We have created a culture of non engagement because many feminist icons have told us over and over that is good boundaries, when it may simply be a better way to simply protect oneself from those with just as valid but divergent perspectives. It hasn’t furthered women’s equality, and it isn’t creating more opportunities, for most of us.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Hi, Liz. Thank you. I saw bullying. I saw cruel things being said about a person, coupled with a movement to push them out. And I understand not everyone saw those things, which I am grateful for. Because it was ugly. I saw something offensive and uncomfortable and I walked right towards it. I’m glad you feel that’s the right way! I think there are many different ways in which this has resonated with folks. And I appreciate you sharing.

Define Nice - Liz Getty's avatar

Women bully. Truthfully, even Glennon has been known to, often. For some reason a lot of women simply cancel folks with opposing viewpoints, she cancels and actually tells her followers to block and cancel anyone that makes them uncomfortable, often, and calls it a healthy boundary. So, it’s hard for me to get upset when others follow her suit, here. Unlike you for me she no longer feels relevant and the entry to Substack (and yes the posts title alone) felt intentional and marketed, not warm and sincere, the term remains tone deaf. I really appreciate your tone and voice here, I clearly do not have the same level of compassion.

Jessica Kantrowitz's avatar

I do know Glennon personally and can confirm she’s the real deal. Plus she’s lifted up more writers than I can count, myself included.

Abbey Wade's avatar

Yes!!! Thank you, Jessica. I’m so glad you shared this. I think we all feel that to be true. And it’s lovely getting that confirmation. I appreciate you❤️

Aniwalk's avatar

I’m so sorry she’s gone already. I’ve followed her for years (Momastery blog) and bought all her books, I’m in the pod squad and because I’m no longer on any other platform (IG, FB etc) I was delighted to see her here. I love Liz Gilbert too and loved the video they did. I feel for Liz Gilbert because she was so genuine in believing what a kind space SS is. I hope Glennon comes back but I can see that I will leave Substack soon if it’s going to the same dark spiteful place that the other platforms have gone. I have no room in my life for nonsense like this.

Abbey Wade's avatar

It’s really tough to take in. It’s so unfortunate. All of it. Truly
